I was on a new podcast called WTF Now. My episode is called How the internet went wrong. Sad title, but you will understand when you listen.

This is really back to my strong belief that we need regulation when it comes to user profiling. IMHO it should just be banned. Have a listen and let me know what you think!

Great little video by John Oliver about AI. One thing he did not get, however, is that also the comments are likely AI generated...

Now you can have a discussion about the usefulness of AI for all kinds of stuff, but to me is is disgusting that Meta is deciding to feed their users this stuff. When it comes to social media, I would think that most people are interested in what their friends have to say or what people they follow have to say. AI generated content is not that.

Who would have thought that anyone would think it is a good idea to ban regulation of AI and algorithmic content? This is a seriously bad idea.

I continue to believe that we should ban user profiling and the use of user profiles for advertising and content algorithms. Given where we are, I think that is the right thing to do and I think more and more are seeing that as the only way to solve the issues we have today.

All I ever wanted super computers for was to do math. Like, fluid modeling, protein folding, lydar interpretation, radio telescopes. Why are they now only making really bad fake TikTok and scammer coin, and why is the computer the size of a stadium to do that but a small one can do the math stuff. Humans seem really out of control with nonsense...

I believe we are all vulnerable to misinformation. The first group was really people on Facebook and in particular men over 50.

I also do not think that Google is a reliable source for information and even less with more AI use. The most reliable source of information may depend on your country. In the Nordics, I would trust the government and government media, but I also understand that that can be an unreliable source in many countries.

Then you are left with the more mainstream media, again depending on your country.

What clearly does not work is algorithmic content selection. I think we should know that by now. This is one of the reason why we include an RSS reader in Vivaldi.

So the solution to AI scams is... more AI. We have all seen the increase in AI generated scams. The solution to that is more AI? Maybe the reason more ads are being blocked is that there is actually just a lot more scams due to AI making it easier to make?

I still believe that the move from contextual ads to surveillance based ads was and is a massive mistake and the way to fix that is to ban surveillance based ads.

Contextual ads were also a lot more manual, most of the time, meaning scams were harder. Time to learn from mistakes and get rid of surveillance based ads?

In an early March announcement that was underreported at the time (but just became a lot more relevant in early April) the Trump regime revealed its intention to collect and presumably monitor social media handles of folks applying to legally work and reside in the United States:

theintercept.com/2025/03/23/tr

Trump Wants Immigrants on U.S. Soil to Hand Over Social Media Accounts to Apply for Citizenship

"Collecting social media information, according to the USCIS proposal first posted March 5, is necessary “for the enhanced identity verification, vetting and national security screening.”

The proposal specifically cites Trump’s January 20 executive order, which advocates have warned goes well beyond the Muslim travel ban from Trump’s first term, which targeted people living abroad.

The new executive order stated that “the United States must ensure that admitted aliens and aliens otherwise already present in the United States do not bear hostile attitudes toward its citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles, and do not advocate for, aid, or support designated foreign terrorists and other threats to our national security.”

USCIS said the social media handles it collects would be used to determine if people applying for a variety of immigration statuses pose a “security or public-safety threat.”"

Of course, observers immediately noted the connection between this proposed policy and Trump's ideological policing, kidnaping, and attempted deportation of foreign students who participated in anti-Genocide protests and/or oppose the Trump regime:

"In light of Columbia University protester Mahmoud Khalil’s ongoing detention, one official from a Muslim civil rights group said the new policy poses special danger for critics of Israel and the Trump administration.

“This policy would disparately impact Muslim and Arab applicants seeking U.S. citizenship that have voiced support for Palestinian human rights,” said Robert McCaw, director of government affairs at the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “Collecting the social media identifiers of any potential green card applicants or citizens is the means to silencing their lawful speech.”

Furthermore, as a representative of the EFF presciently observed, there are few if any limits on the scope of what the government can do with this data if they get it, and modern AI technology allows for the regime to ideologically police and target a terrifying number of people who oppose our fascist overlords. It's also, strictly speaking, a violation of Constitutional rights:

"The policy proposal does not sketch out limits on how USCIS can use its newly acquired data, according to Saira Hussain, a senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Hussain said she was particularly concerned that the government might use artificial intelligence or other automated tools to punish speech it dislikes, pointing to a news report that the State Department is using AI to revoke the visas of people who allegedly express “pro-Hamas” sentiments.

Hussain said she feared a chilling effect, where people applying for a change in status refrain from speaking about potentially controversial issues.

“Anybody who is within the bounds of the United States has First Amendment rights,” she said. “The Constitution applies whether you are somebody who is a citizen or somebody who is a green card holder who is here in the United States. I think that this administration is trying to chip away at that notion, but that is very much what First Amendment jurisprudence has been under the courts.”

Finally, it should be pointed out that the regime's proposal gives no indication whatsoever of when the government would stop recording and monitoring the social media activities of the people it's targeting:

"CAIR’s McCaw said he worried that the policy could be used to continue tracking people’s activity on social media even after they become naturalized citizens.

“There’s no clear sign on when this intrusion into our electronics and communications will end,” he said."

If you needed another reason why LLMs are problematic, read this.

The problem is that any popularity algorithm can be manipulated. This is something we have seen with search SEO, with social media algorithms and now with LLMs. People will try to manipulate these algorithms for marketing reasons and sadly for more nefarious reasons.

For me, the first step of any solution is to ban user profiling.

Last afternoon I was listening to Bloomberg radio and I heard the IBM CEO talk about the greatness of AI. As part of that he proudly proclaimed that they had replaced 600 HR workers with an AI bot.

Personally, I hate having to deal with bots. There is far too much of them. I do not know many that prefer to deal with bots either.

HR is to me an important function. A big part of the function, to me, is to care for employees. Replacing that function with bots is a sign to me that you just do not care.

To Recall or not to Recall?

I asked you whether you would like to use Microsoft Recall and 96% said no. 4% said yes, but a couple of you said you did that by mistake.

When Microsoft first introduced Recall, it was on by default. Then they turned it off, because people were appalled. Not sure what they do now.

Dear lawyers and politicians, all sane people, Europe has proper regulatory measures around technology and needs MORE regulation, not less.

This whole fuss around AI... Some technologies will remain, some will go away. But by no means listen to insults by bigots financially motivated by US billionaires. Europe has the best regulation and must continue to do so!

Innovation does not require trashing human rights, stealing copyrighted content or invading people's privacy. When it claims it does, that is not innovation but a lie, force-fed by villains who erode democracy, while you keep assessing what kind of salute did a certain inauguration guest do.

I understand how technologies work. And I say - regulate AI.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) hype is mainly associated with Large Language Models (LLM), which became available due to neural networks trained on very large datasets. Yet can those applied chatbots be considered intelligent?

I've recently heard OpenAI claiming their recent chatbot o3 progressed so much in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), that they succeed in solving PhD-level problems. Ambitious, yet ridiculous claim.

Although the term AGI is often used to describe a computing system that meets or surpasses human cognitive abilities across a broad range of tasks, no technical definition for it exists. As a result, there is no consensus on when AI tools might achieve AGI. Some say the moment has arrived; others say it is still far away.

Source: How should we test AI for human-level intelligence? Nicola Jones (2025). Nature | Vol 637 | 775.

And since all of these tests, such as ARC-AGI, are based on questions-answers, it is interesting to note even OpenAI's o3 still fails to solve plenty of questions that humans consider straightforward.

So no human-level intelligence any time soon, folks :blobcatjustright:

It's really effing obvious LLMs are a con trick:

If LLMs were actually intelligent, they would be able to just learn from each other and would get better all the time. But what actually happens if LLMs only learn from each other is their models collapse and they start spouting gibberish.

LLMs depend entirely on copying what humans write because they have no ability to create anything themselves. That's why they collapse when you remove their access to humans.

There is no intelligence in LLMs, it's just repackaging what humans have written without their permission. It's stolen human labour.

When we talk about systems like , one thing we can do to help people understand what they do is to not describe our interactions like a conversation.

Using can definitely FEEL like a conversation. ESPECIALLY when the designers and implementers of these tools built interfaces that look like chat windows and replicate the indicators we've come to recognize as someone else typing.

The creators of these interfaces are misleading people with these design elements.
